MLS Preview: Seattle Sounders vs. San Jose Earthquakes

In what has been a very difficult season for the Earthquakes, Sunday's game provides the team with a chance to win a piece of silverware, the NASL Heritage Cup which is given to the winner of the series between the two teams which bear the name of their NASL forebarers. Last season, the Quakes were considered the most successful expansion team in the history of the MLS...well that title has been transferred to the Seattle Sounders who have been a been a true revelation with their capacity stadium and most importantly their record of 7-3-8 which good enough for 2nd in the MLS Western Conference. The Quakes are coming off a hard fought draw against D.C. United, in which San Jose was able to come back from a two goal deficit to get a hard fought point.

The Seattle Sounders boast an impressive offense that is headlined by Colombian international striker Fredy Montero who is one of the leaders in the MLS goal tally with 9. The former Departivo Cali forward has preformed so well for Sigi Schmid's men, this season that he has drawn interest from Premier League side Fulham. In addition, to Montero, former US International Goalkeeper Kasey Keller has proven to be a great acquisition for Seattle as he is currently second among MLS keepers with a 0.80 Goals against average with 6 shut outs. However, the real engine that makes this Sounders team go is the play of former Cuban international and Sounder defensive midfielder Osvaldo Alonso. The Cuban exile has earned comparisons to MLS Superstar Sharlie Joseph with his ability to distribute the ball to his attackers while also providing stingy defense. The Sounders however will be without their DP former Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg who was given a red card on a highly suspicious call in the second half of Seattle's match with Chicago last week. Seattle coach Sigi Schimid will have US international Brad Evans back in his starting line up as he returns to the team after playing for the US in the Gold Cup.

Meanwhile in San Jose, the Quakes are currently suffering from multiple injuries as their top two goal scorers Ryan Johnson (Shoulder) and Arturo Alvarez (Hamstring) would be very lucky to make the field against Seattle. Should the Quakes not have these two players to call upon, much more will be required from Darren Huckerby and the rest of the Quakes offense. One player to look for against Seattle that should see some time on the field is Quincy Amarikwa who turned in a very impressive 20 minutes against D.C. United on Saturday displaying a total effort from the moment that he stepped on the field. However, if San Jose is able to have Johnson and Alvarez on the field and keep in mind, that, Johnson was quoted as saying this week that he was "optimistic" about playing on Saturday, they will provide an offense that may be able to cause some problems for a very strong Seattle defense.

Sunday's game is sure to be a very exciting match as the word is that the Seattle Sounders largest supporters group, the Emerald City Supporters are bringing upwards of 200 fans to Estadio Buck Shaw on Sunday for what should make for an impressive atmosphere at the match. Remember that BSB will be live from Buck Shaw and will be live blogging from the match.

The stage is nearly set as El Tri coach Javier Aguirre has released his squad for the August 12th qualifier at Estadio Azteca against the United States. This roster is considerably stronger than the team that defeated the United States 5-0 in the Meadowlands and will surely be energized by that result. However, this roster does feature many of those players who were instrumental to that victory such as Giovani Dos Santos and Guillermo Ochoa who have finally appeared to solidify their spots with El Tri.

From a US perspective, this line up has to be very worrisome for Bob Bradley as this roster is very balanced from an experience perspective as the core of the team at the Gold Cup is boosted by historic leaders of the national team in Rafael Marquez and Cuauhtémoc Blanco. The player that should prove to be the most dangerous on that (surely) sweltering day in D.F. is Deportivo winger Andres Guardado who many US fans will remember as the player who scored an amazing goal in the final of Gold Cup 2007. Guardado will surely be a focal point as the team will look to release him down the wings at the American defense.

In terms of those players not included in the squad, the biggest would be America Midfielder Pavel Pardo. Pardo, the former captain of Mexico has been reported by many sources in Mexico to have a dispute with Aguirre that may have resulted in his exclusion from the team. Pardo spoke to BSB earlier in July and stated his personal desire to continue his national team career but may not be highly rated on Aguirre's depth chart.
No word yet however, on when Bob Bradley looks to release his roster for the training camp which will take place in Miami, FL but look for him to boast a full strength line up to counter Aguirre's stars.

News and Notes

Andre Luiz to sign with Quakes

According to thebaysoccer.com, the Earthquakes have recently completed the signing of former Brazilian international defender Andre Luiz who last played for Jaguares de Chiapas in Mexico. Luiz was at Quakes training this afternoon and is currently awaiting to agree to a contract. There was no word on how long whether or not Luiz would be able to play in Sunday's match against Seattle. Quakes Head Coach Frank Yallop stated in an interview with Center Line Soccer that " “(Luiz is) very experienced, and a good smooth player in the center of the park,”. Yallop also assuaged fears about the player's fitness by saying that "Fitness is not an issue". If Luiz is able to come in and be effective, this could be a great inclusion into a Quakes side that needs positives as it prepares for 2010.

Johnson injury not as severe as first thought

Ryan Johnson was unable to train this afternoon with his teammates but made clear that he may be able to take the field when the Quakes take on the Sounders on Sunday. After a collison against a DC United defender on Saturday, Johnson was forced to leave the field with a sprain in his left shoulder but X rays preformed on Monday have returned negative. According to Center Line, , Johnson stated that he is on pain killers and would not need a brace when he returns to the field. Should Johnson be able to see the field on Sunday, it would add considerable danger to a Quakes attack against a very stingy Sounders defense.

Shining Stars: MLS All Stars vs Everton FC

Before we get into the business that is the Quakes epic clash against the Seattle Sounders, tomorrow the MLS All-Stars will take on Everton FC at the Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City. The premiership side, hail from Liverpool and finished in 5th in last season's EPL standings. It was a thrilling season for the "Toffees" which included a run to the FA Cup final. This is the 5th straight year that the best in MLS will get a chance to compete against European opposition.

This year's MLS All Stars boast leading vote getter Freddie Ljungberg from the Seattle Sounders who lead the league with three other selections in the squad (GK: Kasey Keller, FW: Fredy Montero and DEF: Jhon Kennedy Hurtado). In a recent interview with the New York Times, the former Arsenal midfielder spoke about what a "great honor it is" to play in such a match for the fans. The rise of the Sounders as well the inclusion of several players who have seen their stock rise greatly means that this year's MLS All Star Team only includes two players from the group that beat West Ham United last season in Landon Donovan and Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

Everton in their second US visit in as many years boast their complete starting line up including US international goalkeeper Tim Howard. Howard was a focal point for Everton's success last season, as he earned the Liverpool based club their spot in the FA Cup final with his impressive saves during a Penalty shootout against eventual Premiership champions Manchester United.

Everton has recently made a splash on US soil with their recent signings of Ventura County Fusion defensive midfielder Anton Peterlin as well as Wake Forrest Junior forward Cody Arnoux. Both players come from the highly regarded College soccer system and were able to impress Everton Head Coach David Moyes in their trials that they warranted being signed by the club. Neither player however will be on the Everton squad to face off against the MLS All-Star side but are sure to have a bright future on the blue side of Liverpool.

Cal Soccer Ranked #8 in Preseason Rankings

Cal Soccer has been ranked number 8 by the College Soccer News. Cal finished the 2008 season with a 12-4-5 record as well as 5-2-3 mark in the Pac-10. The team is coming off a very tough season after two straight Pac-10 titles in 2006 and 2007. In addition to this ranking, Junior forward Andrew Wiedeman has been named on the Preseason All-American team by the CSN. As we approach Cal's first game against Georgetown on September 4th, BSB will be doing a preview of what should be a very bright season for the Golden Bears.

Zlatan introduced to Barcelona

You always knew that Barcelona would find a way to respond to the hoarding of World Superstars at Real Madrid. Granted there might not have been as many people as the Madrid introductions of Kaka and CR9 but the Barca crowd was in full force to welcome their new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic who will be wearing the number 9 for the squad. I've got to admit that I like the way that Barcelona does things as it doesn't have that over the top feeling that the Bernabeau presentations had. I think that the fact that people actually rushed the field might have a bit to do with it. Thank goodness that ESPN will be covering La Liga this season so no one has to miss a minute of what should be the Season to end all seasons.

San Jose Earthquakes/DC United Post Game Interviews

Last night, the San Jose Earthquakes were able to earn a hard fought draw with the visiting D.C. United. The feeling post game is that this was a great showing by the Quakes who were able to show the life that many believe they've been lacking all season. However, with a team that is as far out of contention as the Quakes are, you'd have to believe that they would have appreciated those 3 points at home a lot more. On the D.C. United side, what started off looking like a runaway quickly turned into a battle for the East's 2nd best squad. It appeared as though the speed that the Quakes showed in the second half as well as the momentum earned after that Ryan Johnson goal at the end of the first half put the team on their heels. Overall, it is a truly exciting game and one would have to expect more when the current darlings of the MLS crowd, the Seattle Sounders arrive at Buck Shaw next Sunday. Here is BSB's coverage of the Post game Interviews.

Frank Yallop, Manager, San Jose Earthquakes
On the Team's Come Back:
"We showed great spirit to not let us really get down on ourselves and we were able to get back in the game and nearly win it in the end. We always want to get three points but it was a step in the right direction in terms of coming back and getting something out of the match.

On the second half corrections:
"A few changes here and there, I think it took us awhile to figure that out. But I felt it started to look alot better in the second half as a group. I think we believed in each other and then we started to play better."

On the Atmosphere:
"The Crowd was great, they could have gotten on top of us earlier on. On me and the players but they really got behind with us."

Tom Soehn, Manager, D.C. United
On the team's performance:
"We played one of the worst half's I've seen. Mental Errors, we just didn't have it today. That's not a sign of a team that wants to get better and that's something we'll have to work on to get over that hump."

On the Quakes Speed:
"We gave them all kinds of space. Any time you have fast guys and you're organized its not a problem, but we were stretched and we gave them passing lanes and now we opened ourselves to be attacked one on one".

Andrew Jacobson, Midfielder, D.C. United

On The Let down
"We let up a little, we got complacent with our game. I think we had a good start and a great first half but we just couldn't finish the game off right."

On Returning to the Bay
"It's Great. It's been awhile, I haven't had a lot of free time as I went straight from France to D.C. I saw a lot of the family after the match but I was looking forward to get them a win but we just weren't able to do that tonight."

Ryan Johnson, Forward, San Jose Earthquakes:

On Where This Result Leaves the Quakes going into Seattle:
"I'm glad we've got a stretch of game at home and we're going to do the best we can at home. For us not to lose this game tonight was pretty good so we can use the momentum that we had in the second half into a good stride for the next week and the weeks along."

That is all from the coverage of last nights game. Stay with BSB as later this week, we will provide the readership with a special exclusive.

San Jose Earthquakes vs D.C. United Live Blog

Welcome BSB fam to Estadio Buck Shaw where BSB is reporting live. This game is the first match between the Quakes and United of the season. We'll be emphasizing our main story line of the return of Cal starlet Andrew Jacobsen to the Bay Area. Make sure to follow along with our live blog and the post game interviews.

Starting Line Ups

DC United: GK: Wicks, DEF: Burch, Jakovic, Namoff, MID: Fred, Wallace, Gomez Jacobson, Olsen, FWD: Emilio, Pontius

SJ Earthquakes: GK: Cannon, DEF: Leitch, Hernandez, McDonald, Zaher, MID: Ribeiro, Sanchez, Huckerby, FWD: Johnson, Glen, Convey

0- Nice Crowd on hand for this match up. The D.C. United Supporters Group Barra Brava is in attendence to support their squad, it'll be exciting to see if they can out sing the Casbah( the quakes supporters group) . As you can see above, El Salvadorian Captain Ramon Sanchez has been thrown right into the Quakes starting eleven. The Quakes are hoping that he can inject an immediate impact.

1-Quick off and we're underway. The Casbah is in full voice.

2- DC UNITED PENALTY! Zaher brings down Emilo in the box. Questionable penalty by many in the box especially this early in the match. Gomez to take the kick. This would be catastrophic for the Quakes to start down this early.

3- GOAL: CHRISTAN GOMEZ slots it right and beats Joe Cannon who guesses incorrectly. Not at all the way that the Quakes wanted to start the game as they are quickly down this early in the match.

8- Olsen slots a pass into Emilo that the Quakes are lucky to track back and stop. DC United corner which is eventually cleared by San Jose after several testy clearances

11- A speculative effort by Quakes Midfielder Ribeiro is taken from just outside the box. The shot bounces and forces Josh Wicks to make a save.

12- United Corner cleared away by

15- Foul on the TnT international Cornell Glen by Ben Olsen forces a SJ free kick outside the box. Sanchez takes his first Quakes free kick that foces Wicks to make a save. Nice shot on goal by the Salvadorian.

17- Link up between Olsen and Gomez that beats the Quake defense forces Joe Cannon to play the ball.

18- Corner. Taken by Huckerby to the head of Johnson nearly forces a shot on goal but is cleared out by the United Defense which has appeared particularly stingy tonight. The Quakes are going to have to work much harder

20-Cannon plays the ball outside the box which tows the line to Bobby Convey who is able to nearly beat his first defender but the attempt is quickly cleared by United's Burch.

21-GOAL! Shot by Olsen bounces off a Quakes defender to a waiting Christian Gomez. VERY difficult for the Quakes now, it appeared that Gomez was way offside but because the shot came off a Quakes defender, the refs rule that the goal will stand. Hernandez picks up a yellow card for dissent on that call. The Quakes are looking VERY frustrated now. 2-0 United

26- United Rookie Chris Pontius plays the ball to Christian Gomez who then feeds Pontius with a picture perfect cross. However, the rookie is unable to finish as the header goes right back into the hands of Joe Cannon.

32- United has been inside the Quakes end the entire match as the possession is clearly being handled by the United Midfield. Former Cal midfielder Andrew Jacobsen is doing a great job in handling the Quakes offense as the Quakes are struggling to generate anything so far tonight.

35- Quakes Corner taken by Huckerby is cleared away by Ben Olsen who just beats a streaking Ryan Johnson.

36-QUAKES GOAL! RYAN JOHNSON with a beautiful effort to play the ball into the United net. The play started with a beautiful low cross by Michael Zaher which goes off the head of Cornell Glen where Ryan Johnson plays a beautiful backwards effort to give him his 7th goal of the season. Johnson has been a ray of light for the Quakes all game long and has finally seen his efforts rewarded. Game on in Buck Shaw

39- Foul by 23 United sets up a Quakes free kick which Ryan Johnson jumps over Namoff to get a beautiful header on net which is saved by Wicks. Johnson hits the ground hard and is slow to get up. Johnson is leaving the pitch holding his left shoulder which made contact with the field hard after that beautiful effort.

41- QUAKES SUB: Bad News for the Quakes as Ryan Johnson is taken off for Chris Wondolowski. Johnson is still holding the shoulder on the sideline. Hopefully for the Quakes the injury will not keep him out of next week's Heritage Cup tie against Seattle.

44- QUAKES MISS- A through ball is played into Antonio Ribeiro misses wide but the ball is recovered by Bobby Convey who misses a wide open net. very disapointing for the Quakes but they are clearly showing some life.

45- UNITED SAVE- Great work effort b the Quakes leads to a Ribeiro pass into Cornell Glen who is unlucky to put the ball in the back of the net from 2 yards out.

47-Free Kick taken by Convey is cleared by Wicks who is able to dish the ball to a sraeking Ben Olsen. Beautiful Counter attack by United as Cannon is forced to come out and stop the ball. San Jose then counters right back leading to a Huckerby Free kick which goes straight into the safe hands of Wicks. Beautiful back and forth soccer at the end of the half!

HALFTIME- This game has been all DC United with the Screaming Eagles holding the possession advantage at the half. The Quakes have proen to be very stingy opponents however and are doing what they can to stay in the match. Surely, San Jose will be lementing the great chances that the team has had so far in the half. However, the news is bad for the Quakes as Ryan Johnson is slowly walking off the field at the half. BSB will provide you with the answer at FT with how severe the injury is.

INJURY UPDATE- Ryan Johnson with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. Ouch....

45- QUAKES SUB Ribeiro out for Shea Salinas

49- Foul on Glen leads to a Quakes Free Kick. The ball is played to the head of McDonald whose effort goes just wide left.

52- Glen beats his defender Namoff and sets up a shot that goes into the side netting. Glenn has to be very disappointed with his finishing tonight but you've gotta believe that he will be able to break free if he continues to get these chances.

54- United continuing the dominate the possession. Jacobsen takes a beautiful effort which appears to go off the hand of a Quakes defender. No Call. Emilo is able to get second chance on the rebound but ths hot goes just over the net.

55- UNITED SUB: Jaime Moreno comes on for Andrew Jacobsen. Nice preformance by the ex Golden Bear. It appears as if Sohen is clearly looking to finish off this game and the very stingy quakes.

57-Jaime Moreno making an immediate impact as he plays a ball to Pontius which Rodney Wallace takes but the ball is deflected out for a corner.

59- The Quakes appear to be playing the match very defensive and clearly not looking for that extra pass to instigate an attack. Youd think that the Quakes were ahead with the manner in which they are holding the ball.

60- Speculative effort by Bobby Convey who out runs Olsen to set up a shot from just outside the box.

61-YELLOW CARD on United. Olsen takes down a streaking Huckerby. Olsen appears to be given a card for dissent on that foul.

62- QUAKES PENALTY!! Quakes corner goes off the hand of Wallace in the box and we have a penalty. Glen to take it.

62-QUAKES GOAL! CORNELL GLEN finally gets on the score sheet. Beautifully taken by Glen who slots it left of Wicks who chooses incorrectly. Very well deserved by Glen who has done all he can to try and bring the Quakes level. 2-2

65-United Corner taken by Gomez is headed out by Glen who appears to be limping. Glen appears to have pulled a muscle on that very strong effort to make that clearance. Glenn will leave the field and await return.

67-Well taken run by Wondolowski who beats his defender and goes down in the box. No Call by the refs as they appear to rule that he went down a little too easy for their own taste.

69- Quakes Corner earned by Glenn who is still limping very badly on the field. Quakes coach Frank Yallop would be wise to remove him very quickly to sustain the San Jose attack. United clears the danger.

71- Beautiful throughball to Huckerby who challenges the United defense and sees his cross go off a United defender for a Quakes Corner. The corner is cleared by United

71- QUAKES SUB: Glen coming off for Amarikwa

73- UNITED SUB: Danny Szetele makes his United debut coming on for United captain Ben Olsen.

74- Nice Effort by newly brought on Quincy Amarikwa. Amarikwa wins the battles with the United defender to set up a shot that goes just wide of the net.

75-a Huckerby cross appears to be just too much for a streaking Ramon Sanchez who just misses the cross.

76- The game has undergone a major shift from earlier as the Quakes are clearly battling for each ball and so far in this half dominating possession. The Quakes are clearly putting great pressure on this tired United defense. Great change in intensity by the Quakes who clearly want this match.

78- Quakes corner won by inspired play by Amarikwa who has been a spark plug since his inclusion in the match. Cleared by United.

79- Chance by Huckerby is stopped as a sliding Namoff. Huckerby is begging for a call but doesn't appear to get the call. a Loud roar comes up from the Buck Shaw crowd begging for that foul.

82-Amarikwa has made an immediate impact since he has entered the game clearly showing the effort that the Quakes need since they lost both Johnson and Glen to injury. The quakes appear to be playing their offense through him and are looking for chances to feed him the ball. If BSB were to suggest anyone breaks his deadlock for the quakes it would be him.

82- Namoff brings down Amarikwa for a Quakes free kick. the effort is weak however and is cleared but not out of danger. As the chance continues and Huckerby sees a chance at net go out. Huckerby's calls for a corner are ignored.

85- Throughball by Huckerby is hit too hard for a streaking Wondolowski. HThis is Huckerby's second ball that he has stroke just a bit too hard.

85- UNITED SUB: Devon McTavish comes on for Luicano Emilio

87- Nice effort by Moreno who is clearly showing his age since being put into the game to Fred but the Brazilian is offside. Fred has been a great disappointment for BSB tonight as he has clearly appeared invisible in the United attack.

87- Beautiful Streak up field by the QUAKES! Shot by Wondolowski is stopped by a diving Namoff however to clear United of danger.

89-Long range effort by Fred goes straight into the hands of Cannon. He appears to be reading along tonight.

90- Wonderful effort by Amarikwa who is continuing to impress since coming on. However his shot is wide of the mark. The fourth official is showing 2 minutes of Stoppage time.

FINAL- 2-2 Tie Difficult night for the Quakes as they lose both of their goal scorers to injury right after the goals were scored. However, the play of Amariwka has shown great promise for the Quakes should Glen or Johnson not be able to make the game next week. United however was very lucky to score both goals which came on two very questionable calls. Overall, the quakes can be very proud of their preformance tonight as they clearly rebounded for a poor second half to challenge the 2nd place United. With this point earned tonight D.C. United moves back to 1 point away from Eastern Conference leaders Chicago who also drew earlier today. We'll be back with additional coverage and post game interviews from this draw tonight at Estadio Buck Shaw.

MLS Preview: DC United vs San Jose Earthquakes

Tonight, the San Jose Earthquakes take on D.C. United at Estadio Buck Shaw. D.C. United come into this match winners of their last two road matches facing the Earthquakes who has are currently losers of their last two games. United head west to San Jose just two points from Eastern Conference leaders Chicago to face an Earthquakes squad which is on the opposite end of the table in the Western Conference and currently looking for positives to take them into 2010.

This match is very significant for both sides as they will be able to call upon one new player each to boost their rosters for the rest of the season. Earthquakes bring in new signing Ramon Sanchez, the captain of El Salvador who officially signed with the team earlier this week. While D.C. United head coach Tom Sohen will have U.S. Olympian Danny Szetela to call upon after Szetela was finally cleared to play by the league office.

The key match up of this match takes place between Quakes forward Ryan Johnson and United defender Dejan Jokovic. Johnson currently leads the Quakes in total goals with 6 on the season while Jokovic provides the anchor to a United defense which has had its problems this season giving up a total of 18 goals making them second to last in Goals Allowed with the Quakes total of 20 goals allowed, the only mark that is higher.

In addition to this critical battle, look out for D.C. United's Berkeley connection with their starting eleven likely to bost former Cal Soccer superstar Andrew Jacobson who scored 11 goals in 86 appearances for the Golden Bears. Jacobson, a bay area native who played a vital role in Cal's back to back Pac-10 titles in 2006 and 2007. Jacobson was drafted by D.C. United in the 2007 MLS Superdraft and recently returned to the team after a stint at French Ligue 1 side F.C. Lorient.

The game will be brodcasted live on Fox Soccer channel at 7:30 but you can follow along with us here at BSB as we will be live blogging from Buck Shaw with post game analysis and interviews to follow.

F.C. Gold Pride - LA Sol: A Look Back

“A Complete 90 Minutes” that is the sentiment from the Gold Pride after their tough 0-0 tie against the newly crowned Los Angeles Sol. The game began with the Sol clearly imposing themselves on the Pride with several good early chances. The Gold Pride quickly found their strategy of attacking the Sol down the flanks void as they soon saw themselves stripped easily by quicker Sol defenders. Much of the early Sol deluge lies at the talented feet of Brazilian magician Marta who was able to use her superior skills with the ball at her feet to get through the Gold Pride offense early. The Sol were able to generate numerous chances early on most notably a 12th minute strike from Aly Wagner which was instigated by Marta, however, Pride keeper Allison Whitworth was up to the challenge and was able to come up with a stop.

As the Sol took the game to the Pride early, Allison Whitworth who made several key saves to keep the game level. Whitworth was able to come up with big saves. Along with the impressive display that Whitworth was able to put in, Brazilian Adrianne was able to generate a great deal of pressure on the Sol defense. Adrianne's most threatening attempt came at the 29th minute when Adrianne released a shot which was bobbled by Whitworth giving the Gold Pride, one of its best chances at net. As the game progressed further, the Pride began moving the ball up the midfield using the impressive force of Brazilian defensive midfielder Formiga who was vital in freeing space for the team to operate down the flanks. This allowed the Pride to begin to take the match to the Sol, however, the ability to make that final cross proved to be the undoing of FCGP as the team was unable to reach the strikers despite their ability to make use of sufficent gaps in the Sol Defense. The best of these chances was when a Brandi Chastian cross was unable to connect with Tiffaney Milbrett as the chance went begging.

This tie was vital to both squads as the Sol were able to clinch the Regular season championship and the ability to host the Final at Home Depot Center on August 22nd. The Gold Pride on the other hand who are still not mathematically eliminated from Playoff contention are playing for pride as luck would have it at the moment. The seniments of the match were best described by the recepient of that failed Chastain cross, Tiffaney Milbrett who stated "The players have really refocused themselves and whether we win or lose. We have to bring it for the players, the fans and for the respect of the game. The team has matured since the beginning."

The Gold Pride now head to St. Louis to take on the Athletica in a match which will have serious playoff implications for both sides. If the Pride are able to build on this near complete preformance then this inagural season may not over.

FC Gold Pride/Los Angeles Sol Post Game Interviews

In what can only be described as a hard fought match. The FC Gold Pride turned in a complete 90 minute effort in their well earned 0-0 tie against the First place Los Angeles Sol. Here are a few excerpts from the Post game interviews of the players' first hand reaction towards this well played match.

Aly Wagner, Midfielder, Los Angeles Sol
On What the Sol have to do to prepare for the playoffs after clinching the Top Spot in the table:
"Not Winning is disapointing but we obviously need to sharpen up but in the second half we were able to...create a few more opportunties...just a few of those final things where we are finishing our chances. We need to continue to get our chemistry clicking for all 90 minutes as opposed to just glimses.

Allison Whitworth, Goalkeeper, F.C. Gold Pride
On the Positives to take from the tie:
"We played a full 90 minute game, which is what we've been striving for. Weve played a good 60 or a 45 but this was a full 90 minutes, we didn't get a goal or a break where we wanted but that's one of the best things now is that we've been playing with the passion that we've been needing all season.

Tiffeny Whitworth, Forward, F.C. Gold Pride
On the maturation of the Gold Pride:
"The players have really refocused themselves and whether we win or lose. We have to bring it for the players, the fans and for the respect of the game. The team has matured since the begining. We're proud of this result because (although) they won the league with this point. We got a point and we did not let L.A. get too much"

Brandi Chastain, Midfielder, F.C. Gold Pride
On where the team goes from here:
"We've gotta finish...Finishing is not easy because you're dealing with the best players in the world. We're going to have to keep plugging away, sometimes its pretty and sometimes you get a break. We did everything to do to win and they did everything to defend and that's why the game ended in zero-zero.

Stay up for a detailed recap of this match up with BSB.

4TH Minute- Beautiful Shot generated by Aly Wagner misses dangerously. Goal Kick for the Pride.

5th Minute- Adriane cuts through the Los Angeles defense and works a beautiful given go with fellow countrywoman Formiga. The shot misses dangerously to the right side.

11TH Minute- a Marta pass to Aly Wagner leads to a dangerous shot by the American midfielder that is sc2ooped up by Pride keeper Allison Whitworth. The Sol are clearly looking very dangerous right now but risk being caught on the counter by the Pride.

15th Minute- Marta takes the ball into the box cutting through four pride defenders setting up a corner kick for the Sol. Beautiful display of individual skill.

18th Minute- Attack by the Pride instigated Adriane brings the Pride to the door step of the Sol net but the work is for nothing as the Sol break up the pass.

24th Minute- The Los Angles Sol are dominating possession at the moment as they are able to freely distribute the ball to their attackers with little push back from the Pride defense. Currently, you would have to say that the Sol are imposing their will on the field right now distributing the ball at will.

27 Minute - Marta with a dangerous shot! Beautiful knock down to the foot but the shot goes just right. As I spoke of earlier Marta looks incredibly dangerous right now and it appears to be a matter of time before she breaks the deadlock.

29th Minute- Pride Striker Adriane gets off another strike at the keeper who is unable to handle the ball and it creeps out for a corner which is cleared out by the Sol. Aside from her fello countrywoman Marta, Adrianne looks very threatening tonight
33 Minute- Sol foul on Pride attacker Tiffeny Milbertt. Foul just outside the box.

34 Minute- The free kick taken 4 feet from the box goes off the head of Carrie Dew and out for a LA Sol goal kick.

36 Minute- Adriane fires from distance 5 yards outside the box. The speculative effort misses badly however.

38th Minute- The atmosphere tonight is very good for a week day night game. The fans are loud and vocal in support of the action on the field.

42 Minute- Free Kick from distant by the Sol taken by Japanese International Ay Miyama is headed by Marta straight into the safe hands of Whitworth for the pride.

43rd Minute Brandi Chastain takes a free kick from 10 yards outside the boxx that ends up way over the bar. The Pride are clearly looking to get that late goal before the half in order to estsablish momentum going into the break.

45th- Pride looking for that back door into the Sol net as a cut through the defense leads to a Chastain header tha t ends up in the hands of Sol Keeper LeBlanc

HALFTIME- Impressive half for both teams as they are able to both create chances. The two players who have really stood out tonight have to b the brazilians, Marta for the Sol and Adriane for the Gold Pride. Marta is having no difficulty imposing her will on the game tonight and is cutting through the Pride defense with ease. In addition Adriane appears highly motivated facing off against her former squad and is seeking some retribution after her recent release.

46 Minute- Los Angeles Sol Sub Lisa Sar is pulled for American International Shannon Boxx.

48 Minute- Impressive showcase by the Pride so far in this match. The adjustment of moving the ball through the center of the field is clearly leading to more chances tat the Sol defense as opposed to bringing the attack down the wings which was the team's initial strategy.

50th Minute- Pride Midfielder Tina DiMartino picks the pocket of a streaking Sol winger and sets up a beautiful chance which Brandi Chastain is unable to put in the back of the net as the shot ends up wide left.

57th Minute Shot by Miyama is blocked by the Pride defender Carrie Dew. Possession is maintained by the Sol and the Sol up with another dangerous shot by Noonan after receiving a cross from Wagner.

58th- Sol Free Kick ends up in the hands of Allison Whitworth.

60th- Speculative shot from Marta ends up just over the bar.

63rd- Dangerous Cross by Brandi Chastain reaches the head of Tiffeny Milbrett. Unlucky for the Pride as the shot hits the side netting.

65th- Beautiful low Cross by Milbrett feeds Di Martino who hits it on net but the ball is tipped just over fora Pride Corner. The Pride are looking very dangerous in the last 5 minutes of this game.

67th- WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY! The ball ends up the foot of Chinese International han Duan as calls for offside are ignored. However Allison Whitworth is able to come up with the clutch save to maintain the level. Difficult sequence their for FCGP as a Pride turn over sets up the through ball which ended in the shot on goal.

69th - Marta cuts up the left side fo the field swearving through the Pride defense. The ball is mishandled by Whitworth and but is cleared back by Pride defender Carrie Dew.

70th- The corner is cleared by the Sol and the ball ends up on the foot of Marta who sets up a shot for Miyama. The shot is muffed but is recovered by Marta who earns a Sol corner.

71st- Corner ends up in the the hands of Whitworth who clears the chance.

71st- Long range effort by Adriane who is unable to capitalize. The shot misses wide.

73rd- Beautiful Back and forth game so far. Both teams have had a number of great chances to break the deadlock but so far finishing has alluded both squads. The Pride however have been unable to make that final cross to reach their target as too often the ball ends up headed out by a Sol defender.

77th- Just as reported by BSB, another pride Cross goes off target and ends up in Row A rather than on the foot of Chastain.

78th- Sol substitution Zerboni for Wagner

78th Yellow card on Sol Goal Keeper LEBlanc for a collison with Adriane. Sets up a Pride free kick.

79th - Free kick taken by Chastain is headed away by Miyama. Sol Goal Kick

80th- FCGP Sub- Chastain is pulled for Kimberly Yokers

81st- Foul on the Pride sets up a dangerous Sol Free Kick

81st-Sol Free Kick ends up in outside the lines for a Pride Goal Kick.

87th- Beautiful save by LeBlanc on a Milbrett shot from just outside the box.

88th- Sol Corner misses badly as it fails to result in a shot on goal.

90th- FCGP Sub Lindsay Massangale for Adriane

90th- Foul on Formiga results in a free kick which is saved confidendly by Whitworth who was truly shined in her third start of the season.

90- 2 minutes of stoppage times.

90- If this game ends in a tie than the Sol will clinch first place in the WPS standings.

FINAL- TIE 0-0 LA now clinches first place in the WPS Standings and now will be able to host the final at Home Depot Center on August 22nd.

The Three Stars of the night:
1. Allison Whitworth, GK FCGP: Making her third start of the season, she turned in a titanic effort despite facing the most prolific offense in the WPS. Despite numerous chances by the Sol including several one on ones, Allison remained tough and refused to allow a goal against a difficult offense.
2. Formiga, M, FCGP: With the difficult task of defending her fellow Brazilian international Marta, Formiga proved herself up to the task as she was impressive in preventing the Sol attack from getting on the score sheet. Formiga was able to prevent Marta from maintaing possession long enough to seriously threaten the FCGP keeper on numerous occassions Although the Sol had many chances, Formiga proved to be the closest ally of Allison Whitworth, as she served as the last person back numerous times.
3. Miyama, M, LA SOL: An engine in midfield, Miyama was involved in many of the Sol's most dangerous attempts on goal. Although she was unable to provide the flash that Marta presented on the field. Miyama was able to make the important passes which were seminal in allowing the Sol to challenge the Gold Pride defense.

That is all for BSB tonight, look for further interviews later tonight.

WPS Focus: Marta vs The Gold Pride

Tonight at 7:00pm, the struggling F.C. Gold Pride take on top of the table L.A. Sol and the best female player in the world, Marta. For those unfamiliar with the Brazilian magician, Marta has been awarded FIFA player of the year three times in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and was the first pick in the WPS allocation draft. The Gold Pride and their defense have a daunting task of stopping the first place Sol who have already qualified for the WPS playoffs.

Here we have highlights of Marta for those unfamiliar with her exploits.

Stay tuned as one of our correspondents will bring you live highlights of the game as well as post game analysis.

Landon to Italy?

According to Soccernet.com, The chair of Livorno, a newly promoted team in Serie A is looking to acquire the services of a certain Landon Donovan for their upcoming season. According to the article, the move would be a short term one which would potentially keep him in Europe until the MLS resumes again in January. This could potentially be a very important move in Donovan's career as he looks to shake the perception that he is not able to make it in Europe.

What are my thoughts on the story? I believe this could finally be the big break which Landon's career has been in dire need of. While not being as glamorous as moves to Manchester United or Bayern Munich, this team will provide him with the week in and week out experience at a club in one of the best leagues in Europe. It will also provide for extra drama as it may also lead to further matches against A.C. Milan where he can go head to head against fellow National Team member Oguchi Onyewu but also against reported nemesis David Beckham. Additionally, Landon may actually be willing to leave Los Angeles after the tumultuous few months that he has had in the Southland.

Starting with this move you have to say that the days of "Landy Cakes" are surely over.

American Gangster: Abby Wambach

Major Props to our girl Abby Wambach with her 100 goal for the United States Women's National Team against Canada. Check out the goal at 0:30 of the video and the beautiful through pass from Lauren Cheney to Wambach which finished like she has time and time again.

Take a bow Abby, you deserve it.

Going for Gold: Gold Cup Semi Final Preview

As we head into the Semis of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, we see the four biggest powers in the region face off. The class of Central America (Honduras and Costa Rica) vs The Northern Established Powers (United States and Mexico) will face each other on Thursday at Chicago's iconic Soldier Field.

Costa Rica vs. Mexico

Two of the most hated rivals in all of CONCACAF square off in what should be the high energy game between these two powers. Costa Rica has breezed so far in the tournament since their opening loss to El Salvador. Los Ticos boast most of their World Cup qualifying squad including captain Walter Cedeno who leads the strong Costa Rican attack. The current leaders of World Cup qualifying are looking to throw a wrench in the established powers by qualifying for the final.

El Tri has had an up and down tournament but finally came to life with the team's performance against Haiti. Under the inspired play of Giovani Dos Santos and Miguel Sabah, the team appears to be finally hitting its stride which will make this team very difficult to face. Another plus of Mexico reaching the semi finals is that it assures that the team will have coach Javier Aguirre on the field for the team's vital qualifer on August 12th vs. the United States.

Final Prediction: Mexico 1 Costa Rica 0

Honduras vs. United States

Both teams are coming off two very hard fought victories in the quarters. Honduras was able to put away a very difficult Canadian team which had been considered one of the most impressive in the tournament before their 1-0 defeat. While the United States got all they could handle from Panama and required a Extra Time Penalty Kick goal by Kenny Cooper to reach the Semi-Finals. The two teams faced off against one another in RFK stadium in Washington DC which ended in a 2-0 victory in a game that was far closer than the scoreline may have noted. However, in this match the United States will be without the two main catalysts to that victory, Charlie Davies and Benny Feilhaber who have since returned to their clubs in Europe.

Los Catrachos lean off the experience of their captain veteran striker Carlos Costly who as two goals in the tournament as well as the impressive play of Walter Julian Martinez who also has two goals including the deciding goal against Canada. The Hondurans look to have these two players link up very closely in order to successfully bypass an American defense which has looked shaky during its past two matches against Haiti and Panama. It will be very important for these two to exploit the weakness of the American defense in order for Honduras to make their first finals appearance since 1991.

The United States, winners of the last two Gold Cups comes into this tournament a determined but still shaky at time due to the high amount of young players injected into Bob Bradley's experimental squad. Despite the Squad's youth, it seems to be developing a flair for the dramatic with the last three victories each coming in the last 20 minutes of the match or in Extra Time. The young members of this US B/C team must attempt to establish themselves early by dominating possession and shutting down Martinez. This job will fall to American Kyle Beckerman who has shown himself to be quite the revelation in this tournament.

Predicted Final: United States 2 Honduras 1

Battle of Los Angeles

A moment of caution before viewing the clip. Any people with small children in the room should ask them to leave and shield their eyes or they may begin to lose faith in their sporting heroes. We can't be responsible for that.

Now the question has to be asked is this going to get worse before it gets better? While it appears that the Galaxy fans are looking to hold no punches about their feelings (As you can plainly see in the video) towards the former England Captain. However, the Galaxy appear to be making strides towards potentially making the playoffs for the first time in three years. During the team's friendly VS AC Milan, they appeared very fluid with Beckham in the lineup with the England International assisting on two goals. If the team is successful, I am certain the fans will grit their teeth and follow this rental player if it means that LA can return to the playoffs. Rest assured however, this will hopefully be the last purely Beckham related post made on this blog.

Inter Milan - Club America Interviews

Following America's thrilling victory over Inter Milan at Stanford Stadium in front of a reported attendance of 31,026. BSB was able to talk with several of the players and coaches in order to get their insight into how this match will better prepare them for the upcoming season As well to address how the craziness of the Transfer Market has effected their clubs.

America Midfielder,Pavel Pardo:
On the physical Nature of the Game:
It is normal because we came to the game trying to win and when we play a game we try to win. And when you play a game against a game against European teams they are also very physical. It is good preperation.

On whether the tournament will prepare the team for the Season:
The tournament is good preperation against International oppostion. It is also very exciting to play against European teams. It is good for us for the start of the season in Mexico because we play two more games before we start the season. It is very good for us.

On the Pressure coming into the Apretura.
There is no pressure because this is a big Club. This is one of the best teams in Mexico so the pressure is normal.

America Manager Jesus Ramirez
Has the team's performance improved during its time in the United States:
"The Club is coming off of a strong season and has truly improved. The Win for the Club is very important and provided good preperation for the upcoming season. Inter Milan and AC Milan are both two tough teams but the goal of the season is to do well in the Mexican Tournament and win the tournament.

Explaining the Team's performance in the Game
The team had many opportunties to win the game in the first half such as the chances by Mosquera and Cabanas but as the team becomes better prepared and acquianted with the team style, the performance will improve.

Inter Vice Coach Giuseppe Baresi
Has the uncertainty surrounding Zlatan affected the team's chemistry?
"There is nothing to say regarding Ibra. Ibra is still an Inter player and until there is some news, He will train with Inter and behave in all respects as a player of Inter Milan should act until his status changes."

On the Intense Nature of the Game:
"They team faced an opponent that was at a higher state of physical prepartion. The players acquitted themselves well with the intensity and will prepare for their next game."

Inter Milan Midfielder, Zlatan Ibrahimovic

On MLS
I have great respect for Major League Soccer. It is not the same as the leagues in England, Italy and Spain but the league is developing and getting more good players. I think that it is a good league but still as a ways to go to reach the European level.

That raps up our coverage of the WFC in Stanford stay tuned for a commentary about the futures of David Beckham and the Galaxy as well as other BSB coverage.

sett

19th Minute-After a flash of brilliance from Salvador Cabanas, with a bicycle kick that missed wide right, the team appears to be settling into midfield. For those not following at home, the America offense appears dangerous down the flanks and appears to be taking this game to the Inter Defense

20th Minute- Yellowcard for America Angel Reyna

21st Minute- WHAT A SHOT dangerous header from Thiago Motta on service from Ricardo Quersma

25th Minute- Inter clearly appears to be taking advantage of America's attempts to attack as two Inter scoring attempts go woefully short. in the 23rd Sulley Mullari's pass to Quersema ends up in America's goalie Naverette's chest and in the 25th Marco Materazzi is unable to finish despite beating two defenders imissing wide right. Clearly pre season rust right now.

29th Minute - Beautiful give and go pass from Esqueda to Cabanas ends up for not as Cabanas is unable to finish.

29th Minute: Inter Milan Substitution: Mario Balotelli comes in for Sulley Muntari. We should expect big things from the Italian youth international.

33rd minute Dangerous free kick from Inter Milan a few feet from the box. ends u being cleared by a reorganized Agulias defense.

35th minute- Yellow card for Jean Beausejour after a nasty challenge leads to a Inter corner that sees the wonderful save by America keeper Naverette

37th minute- hard for on Salvador Cabanas by Chievo results in a yellow card and America free kick from just outside the box.

39th- WHAT A SAVE Pavel Pardo hits a beautiful free kick into the top right corner that is saved by an outstretching Belec

45- Joaquin Martinez suffers a serious knock and is down for an extensive period of time but rises up on his own power.

HALFTIME: For what is supposed to be a friendly, America and Inter are trading blows as the game appears to be settling into a physical yet offensive match up. The magantiude of this game is clearly not lost on the Mexican side who are out to prove tat they are going to be competitive in the upcoming Apretura tournament.

46- We're under way!

47-INTER SUBS- at the Half Mourinho made two subs. Former Arsenal Captain Patrick Viera for Marco Materazzi as well as Javier Zanetti coming on for Cristian Chivu

50- GOAL- Off a corner from Pavel Pardo a beautiful finish by Juan Carlos Silva. After attempting to go forward all night it was a well deserved goal by Las Aguilas.

54- Dangerous chyange for Inter Milan nearly needs to a goal for Inter.

55th- SUB- Double substitution for Inter Milan as the Brazilian international Mancini enters for Thaigo Motta and Zlatan Ibrahimovic enters the game for Ricardo Quaresma. Could this be because the much talked about Barcelona has finally fallen through allowing him to enter the game or is Jose really attempting to win this match.

56th- WHAT A MISS- incredible chance by Salvador Cabanas who nearly puts America up 2-0 with a beautiful shot that just goes up and wide. He has been exteremely unlucky to not get a goal in this game.

60th- GOAL! INTER MILAN A corner won by the oustanding play from Zlatan is punched in by Ivan Cordoba. The Inter players appear completely hyped up. This game could see several more goals.

62th- SUB Inter Milan: Obi enters the game for Cambiassso

70th- The game has settled down after the strong surge at the half. at the 69th minute mark Cabanas shoots another beautifully placed Mosquera pass right into the Inter keeper. Mosquera has shown a great amount of energy in this game while Cabanas has to feel incredibly disappointed to have not yet capitalized.

72nd- SUB: America- Arnhold Rivas in for Angel Reyna

75th- YELLOW Card. Marco Balotelli with a horrible tackle on Cabanas. If this weren't a friendly, that would be a red card.

79th- RED CARD- Enrique Esqueda gets sent off after a horrible studs up challenge to the face of Inter keeper Vid Belec. Esqueda promptly goes straight down in pain but is awarded a red card by referee Baldomero Toledo.

82nd- MISS- Inter Mila's Diego Milito misses a wide open net as America keeper Navarette appears to have gotten a finger on it at the last second. We should see som fireworks in the last few minutes of this game.

84th- DOUBLE SUB- Cabanas and Pardo are both removed for Daniel Marquez and Andres Chitviva

86th- RED CARD- INTER MILAN on his first challenge of the day. Obi is sent off for a studs up tackle on Martinez. The tackle in hindsight appears to be weak but the fact that the studs were up on the tackle means a straight red (I call this a Ricardo Clark style red card).

89th- Great atmosphere here today as the Club America fans are out n full force. Suffice to say that the America fans are vocal in support of their team while the Inter Milan section appears to think that they are at a AYSO game.

90th- TWO MINUTES OF STOPPAGE

92nd- BEAUTIFUL SAVE BY NAVERETTE. That may have preserved the tie.

ET- PENALTIES: In a move unknown to those in the press box as well as the players on the field. The game will now head to penalties.

FIRST PENALTY BY MARIO BALOTETTI is in after he fakes left. GOAL 1-0 INTER

first America penalty is in as Andres Chitiva beats Belec

2-2 from hits by Milito and Mosquera.

3-2 INTER after ZLATAN beats Naverette despite guessing correctly.

3-3 america

PENALTY MISS by PATRICK VIERA, THIS IS AMERICA'S CHANCE if Daneil Marquez can hit it in.

GOAL! AFTER BELEC is ruled to be disqualified after charging Marquez. Marquez makes sure that he does not miss the second shot.

BURDIASSO TIES IT 4-4 however if Rojas can hit this penalty the game will be Americas!

GOAL! AMERICA WINS ON PENALTIES.

A beautiful spot kick Rojas beats Belec and ignites the flares at the North stand at Stanford Stadium. America will take a great deal of confidence from this match into their match on the week against AC Milan.

FINAL- WHAT A GREAT GAME. In an atmosphere that was more suited for the champions league than a July friendly, the game was high energy and very physical. Each player had one member of their squad sent off as the folks here on the farm certainly got their moneys worth this evening. After the match a woman charged the field and went straight for America's Pavel Pardo and Inter's Zanetti and Ibrahimovic as well as Patrick Viera. America will be very happy as they made a statement that they could compete at INTER's level. while Inter will be wrong to look down on the competition at the WFC as it appears the Mexicans have come to win the tournament. I will be back with interviews from the game later tonight.

Top of the Food Chain

As we get set Today's game between Inter Milan and Club America. Let's take some time to look at the top three players most likely to make an impact for the two clubs as well as the story lines that are sure to follow each player during the game as well as brief overview of each the career and highlights of each player.

CLUB AMERICA

Pavel Pardo

The Former Captain of Mexico and the Stuttgart Midfielder who returned back to the Mexico City club after a two year stint in Europe. The defensive midfielder is the talisman of this America squad and a major source of inspiration for the younger members of the Squad. Pardo will be charged with stopping the potent Inter offense that boasts(potentially) Serie A's capocannoniere, the reigning scoring champion Zlatan Ibrahimovic . Pardo boasts great experience in dealing with great attackers from his experience in Germany and should be capable at handling the Inter attack.

Salvador Cabañas

The Paraguayan hitman has made a huge impact during his two year stint at the Mexican giants. Although perceived to be battling constant fitness problems, Cabañas scored 13 goals in the Clausura 2009 tournament, coming away as the tournament's second top scorer. A natural goal scorer who shows a great ability for being in the right place at the right time, a trait which has just recently led to interest from Europe, Cabañas' has the potential to cause even havoc for the Inter defense.

Aquivaldo Mosquero

Las Aguilas latest acquisition, a versatile defender and one time captain of Columbia , Mosquero will be eager to show that he can regain the form that led to a move to Spanish giants Sevilla in 2007. Mosquero was one of the rock in the back the led to fellow Mexican side Pachuca's 2007 Copa Sudamerica Title, Mexico's only South American Club title. Mosquero arrives from Europe with high expectations to bring order to the America defense that gave up the fourth most goals in the Clausura 2009 leading to a disappointing 8th place finish. Mosquero will surely be eager to have a big performance against the strong Inter offense to show that he can recover from his stint at Sevilla.

---

INTER MILAN

Mario Balotelli

Considered to be on of the best young talents in the world talents in the world today, the Italian born of Ghanaian parents will surely be given free reign by Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho to make his impact on the Sunday's game. An impressive striker who has scored many goals for Inter as well as the Italian Youth teams, Balotelli however has gained a great amount of negative attention after being the subject to racist chants of "A Black Italian does not exist" by Juventus fans after his goal against the Old Lady in Turin. Balotelli is sure to put a great deal of pressure on Pavel Pardo and the rest of the America defense and will be looking to show that he can battle for a place amount the Inter first XI.

Julio Cesar

Considered by many including Italian keeper Gianlugai Buffon to be the best goal keeper in the world at the moment, the Brazilian international will be playing in his first game for Inter after his victory in the Confederations Cup against the United States. Cesar showed great prowess in the tournament posting three shutouts that led to Brazil capturing the Confed Cup for the third time in its history. Julio Cesar has shown a penchant for having quick reflexes and the ability to make even the most difficult of saves appear simple. It can be expected that he will face a considerable challenge with an America team eager to show that they can play with a team of the caliber of Inter.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The talisman of Inter Milan and considered by his coach Jose Mourinho to be "The best player in the world", Zlatan Ibrahimovic is sure to be on the forefront of the minds of all involved on Sunday even if he is not able to see the field.
Serie A's top scorer in the 2008/2009 season, the Swedish international is one of the foremost threats in the world today due to his ability to both distribute the ball to go with his clinical finishing.

However, Ibra has been linked with a move away from the San Siro since the close of the season and on Saturday, Barcelona President Joan Laporta claimed that a deal was in place to send Ibrahimovic to European Champions Barcelona. The deal if true will send Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o, former Arsenal winger Alexandre Hleb and 46m€ for Ibrahimovic. This deal has at this time not yet been confirmed by the clubs involved or Ibra himself but will sure be the talk of all those on the farm on Sunday.

Los Chucos Suaves

The build up to tomorrow's World Football Classic Game at Stanford reached a fever pitch as Mexican giants Club America released their new kits for the 09/10. The fiesta took place on the Union Square Plaza in heart of the tourist hub of San Francisco. The event led to huge buzz as Las Aguilas fans descended upon the Square.

Members of Club America's Legendary Supporters group "La Monumental". When asked about the pending change of nationalities of former Mexico and Club America left back Edgar Castillo some harsh words were shared, none of which I will print here. Save to say however that it was not kind.

As the Mexican Fashion show began we got to see the new America women's kits. I would not be too far off to say that this woman was the source of the most applause of the night and one can obviously see why.

As the event finally began we saw the new America away jersey inspired by the 1985 Championship winning side. For a team that has been dubbed "the team of the 80s" by many a reporter, it was a great way to recall champions long since passed.

Home Kit

[From Left to right: Jean Beausejour ,Aquivaldo Mosquera,Salvador Cabanas, Pavel Pardo]

Finally the main event as four of the most influential America players spoke to the crowd about their expectations for the upcoming game as well as their excitement at facing Serie A champions Inter Milan. This was one of the first chances for America fans to hear new signing, Columbian Aquivaldo Mosquera who was signed from Spanish club Sevilla and was a member of America's arch rivals Pachuca for many years. He did state that he was much impressed with the fan base of America and spoke that he looked forward to playing at the legendary Estadio Azteca, Club America's iconic stadium.

Luckily I was able to get a few seconds following this staged conversation to speak with former Mexican captain Edgar Pardo.

An exchange that went a little something like this:

O: Pavel about how you feel about your upcoming match with the legendary Inter Milan, as a veteran of Europe, this may be old hat to you?

Pardo: [upon noticing the picture of Landon Donovan on my shirt] Is that a picture of your boyfriend on your shirt??

After cracking up for nearly 3 minutes I was able to finally ask him a serious question once again.

O: Do you expected to be included in future Mexican squads most notably the squad for the August 12th match against the United States?

Pardo: I hope that with good play I can get back on the team. I hope that I am called for that important match.

After the interview the crowd quickly grew restless in their pursuit but i was luckily able to snap a few pictures before the end of the event.

Salvador Cabanas giving his best Deer in Headlights look. One that I am sure he will get often during the game on Sunday.

Lastly a Mexican Naval Officer on duty ended an eventful night on the Square. Stay tuned for the 3 players on each side to look for in tomorrow's game.

Redemption Song

If any of you out there were still doubting that Mandon's ability has changed in these past few weeks, take a look at that second goal. If the Galaxy continues to play the way that it is, bringing in Beckham and former Trinidad and Tobago international Chris Birchall will be just what Bruce Arena's men need to challenge for the MLS Cup. On a sad note though, we need to all observe a moment of silence for the Red Bulls who have been such a spectacular failure after their Thrilling run to the MLS Cup final last season. This is a team that just needs time to keep speeding by faster so this nightmare can finally be over.

Honky Tonk Truth

US/Houston Dynamo Striker and all around American Hero Brian Ching was fined $500 dollars for a comment made on his twitter during the Sunday's game between the Dynamo and the Seattle Sounders. Ching commented on a Fredy Montero goal which appeared to be cleared off the line by Dynamo defender Mike Chabala. Ching tweeted "Ref in seattle just cheated the dynamo. What a joke. Not even close. Ref is a cheat." While it did not appear to be conclusive whether the goal crossed the line, the MLS is completely out of line for fining Ching any sum of money for a comment which he apologized for multiple times the next day on his twitter. Its become very evident that other pro leagues like the NBA and NFL want to do what they can to stop the tweets of their own athletes and this fine by the MLS sets a dangerous precedent for future speech restrictions.

[O note: Stay tuned for our preview of one of the teams we will be covering Sunday: Club America as well as a Galaxy/Red Bulls Recap]

To Live & Die in LA

AP photo / David Beckham (right) and Landon Donovan.

[The first in our weekly series on Major League Soccer]

Pac and Big, Kobe and Shaq..
...Donovan and Becks?

If there is something LA knows a good feud. The 2009 version of the Galaxy has steadily battled back for 4th place in the Western Conference and a good shot at a playoff berth. Al that may change however, now that the circus has come into town fresh off its stop in Milan. Set for their game in New Jersey against Red Bull New York, the question must be asked which Galaxy team will show up? The fighters that have brought the team back into contention for a playoff spot or the team of the past two years that can best be called dysfunctional.

All of that however is taking a backseat however to the drama that has been generated because of the comments Landon Donovan made about David Beckham in "The Beckham Experiment" a book by SI sports writer Grant Wahl. For those that haven't read or have been under a rock for the past few weeks, US Soccer's greatest ever product had some harsh criticisms for the former England Captain calling him uncommitted to the Galaxy and an ineffective leader during the team's harsh 08 season. After touching down in LA last weekend Beckham fired back at Donovan's comments calling the US midfielder "Unprofessional" for his comments. According the press conference for tomorrow's game both have buried the hatchet and declared a truce for the sake of the Galaxy's 09 playoff run.

In all honesty, this "truce" must be taken with a grain of salt especially based on the peaceful comments that the two of them had for one another during that tumultuous 08 season. What's my prediction? As the old saying goes winning cures all problems but the conflict between the millionaire Beckham and the lunch pale MLS (some of who make less than 30k a season) may be a bit too difficult to cure.

One thing is certain...The MLS season just got a lot more interesting.
